Amrita Pritam (31.08.1919-31.10.2005), was the first Punjabi poetess to win Jnanpith award for Kagaz te Kanvas, a poetry anthology. In addition, she has been the receipient of various national and international awards for her poems and poetry anthologies. She was awarded the 'Padma Shree' in 1969 by the Government of India and the 'Padma Vibhushan' in 2004
Furthermore, she has 150 original and translated books to her credit. Baldev Singh 'Baddan, an eminent Punjabi writer, editor and translator, has compiled and edited the Punjabi stories which appeared in its original edition. Amritbir Kaur has translated the stories into English.
