हिंदू समाज में देवी दुर्गा आदि शक्ति के रूप में प्रथम और पूजनीय देवी मानी जाती हैं। देवी दुर्गा अज्ञान और अंधकार रूपी राक्षसों का वध करने वाली हैं। दुर्गा चालीसा में चालीस चैपाइयों में माँ दुर्गा का वर्णन किया गया है। इसमें माँ दुर्गा के सभी रूपों के साथ उनकी महिमा का गुुणगान किया गया है। देवी दुर्गा द्वारा महिषासुर, शुंभ-निशुंभ, मधु-कैटभ, आदि, असुरों के वध तथा संसार में शांति स्थापित करने का भी विवरण है। दुर्गा चालीसा के अंतर्गत दुर्गा स्तुति एवं दुर्गा जी के 108 नामों का उल्लेख किया गया है। Hindus regard Goddess Durga as the foremost and most revered primeval divine power of the entire cosmos. Durga Chalisa includes a hymn of praise to Goddess Durga (Durga Stuti) and mentions the 108 names of Maa Durga.
